Cut

The term “cut” has two references. One is to the diamond’s shape. The other is to its quality, determined by its proportions, symmetry, and polish.

The top-selling diamond cut shape is round brilliant. All other cut shapes like emerald, oval, pear, heart, princess and marquise are considered fancy cuts or shapes.

The cut of a diamond is considered to be the most important factor with respect to its beauty. The cut determines how light is reflected (Brilliance), dispersed, and scintilated.

When establishing the cut grade of a round diamond, there are seven components that determine a diamond's quality.

  • Brightness, fire and scintillation are all based on a diamonds appearance.
  • Symmetry refers to the precision of the cut pattern.
  • Polish is based on the smoothness and luster of the surface.
  • Table and depth percentages refer to a diamonds design.

In the GIA Diamond Cut Grading System, each component is assessed to determine the quality: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair or Poor. According to the GIA system, a diamond is never considered to have an ideal cut. It is important to keep this mind when purchasing a diamond. Be sure the advertised cut grade matches the certification. All Zales diamonds are assessed in accordance to the GIA Diamond Cut Grading System.
